Beta reading is a read-through of your finished manuscript by an outside perspective. This is done before publishing, querying or hiring an editor.
Its value lies in understanding the experience of reading your story, from the eyes of your potential audience.
Good beta reading gives you a map of your work by providing honest feedback on story elements such as plot, pacing and character development; as well as breaking down its strengths and weaknesses, and where potential readers would get confused.

I'm Hope, the reader behind Studio Marginalia.
Before this, I was a ghostwriter for genre fiction. I started on Fiverr, and my 8th client pulled me off the platform. We ended up writing 43 books together over four and a half years.
My only quality control was my client. There were no beta readers or editors following up behind me. So I learned to write from the other side of the page.
Every pacing choice, every character beat, every "will they keep reading" moment had to be written from inside a reader's head, anticipating how it would feel when a choice worked.
After dozens of books written from that angle, you understand what a scene should make a reader feel, and you notice when it doesn't.

What's the difference between a manuscript analysis and a beta read? +
A beta read isn't as thorough or as comprehensive as a manuscript analysis, but it's an economical way to find out, in broad strokes, where your story works and where it doesn't, through a reader's eyes.
Will a beta read replace a manuscript analysis? +
It depends. If you've already had an edit and want a beta read of your revised draft, it can. It can also work if you have a large team of beta readers and a system for combining their feedback into a coherent revision plan. Without knowing your specific circumstances, I can't promise it will.
Will working with you get me published? +
No reader can promise that, and you should be skeptical of anyone who does.
A beta read is a strong step towards strengthening your manuscript and giving it a better chance at whatever comes next.
Will you edit or rewrite my manuscript? +
No. I don't line edit, copyedit, or rewrite. I simply tell you what I see. I also don't suggest ways to improve your manuscript.
If a sentence-level issue is affecting clarity or the reading experience, I'll flag it. But flagging isn't fixing. To reiterate: rewriting, line/copy editing, and offering suggestions aren't part of the service.
Do you offer sample reads for this service? +
I only offer sample reads for Manuscript Analysis. There are a number of reasons for this, but the one that encapsulates them all is that it is simply not necessary for a beta read.
How long does the read take? +
Within 15 business days.
If you have a specific deadline, let me know. I'll confirm whether I can accommodate it before you book.
Do you use AI? +
No. Your manuscript is read and responded to by me, a real person, start to finish. I don't use AI to read, summarize, or generate any part of the feedback.
Is my manuscript kept confidential? +
Yes. Your work is never shared, and is deleted from my personal devices after the follow-up period is over. I always work on contract and I'm happy to sign your own contract or NDA agreement on request.
What format do I send my manuscript in? +
Word (.docx) files or Google Docs, since both let me leave in-line comments right in the manuscript.
